Paik Mee Ok is an existential artist who explores the essential elements of painting—color, canvas, and gesture—while seeking to unite life and art. Through repetitive labor and meditative actions, she accumulates pigment onto the surface, continuously investigating the relationship between material and spirit, reality and ideal, earth and cosmos. In particular, the dark blue fabric works presented in this exhibition embody both her artistic direction and her way of life. Though they initially appear as simple monochrome abstractions, a closer look reveals delicate textures formed through countless repetitions of labor. The condensed blue-black surfaces evoke what the artist describes as “questions of existence itself, without end and without answers.”The loosened threads and tangled fibers become waves, cosmic energy, or signs of life awaiting birth, opening possibilities for communication with the world. Over time, her brushwork and dotted surfaces evolve into freer and more natural rhythms. These surfaces—composed of points and lines—create living vibrations in which experience, memory, imagination, reality, and the past coexist. Her monotone works further reveal an experiential aesthetics of restraint, balancing “seclusion and expansion, simplicity and splendor, expression and control.”Paik Mee Ok’s monochrome painting is not a vague metaphysical longing, but an existential exploration that draws dynamic energy from life itself. Through her work, painting becomes both a contemplative act and a total sensory practice that reconsiders the relationship between image, material, and space.
