백미옥 작가의 회화는 지금을 거슬러 과거로, 점차 태초로, 인간의 손길이 닿지 않은 시간의 영역에 닿길 바라는 인간이자 화가의 바람이 담겨있다. 그래서 그의 회화를 이루는 색감 또한 한국 전통문화에 스민 오행과 방위를 상징하는 오방색으로 변주하는 이유이기도 하다. 화업 30년이 되는 지금의 시점에서도, 그의 다층적인 회화가 이루고자 하는 해답과 의미를 규정하지 않고 탐구를 통해 겸손하게 유보하고 있다. 별과 불의 기원을 감히 알 수 없지만 자신과 현존한다는 숭고만으로 인간적인 위안을 얻듯이, 화가로서 그 감응을 담아내는 것은 개인의 사유이자 시대의 부름에 응답하는 숙명이기도 하다. 회화로서 과거와 현재를 잇는 화가의 개인적인 행위는 어느새 그가 나아갈 미래를 가리키고 있다. 이렇게 그리는 행위는 과거와 현재의 시간을 새롭게 직조한다. 백미옥 작가는 자신의 존재 이유이자 작품이 현존하는 의미를 지금이라는 시간과 연결시키며 회화를 통해 치열하게 표현한다. 먼 훗날 그의 회화가 광범위한 통일된 전체를 이루리라는 것을 직감하며 스스로의 자리를 마련하고 있다.
Paik Mee Ok condenses sensibilities shaped by time into painting. Drawing on obangsaek—the traditional Korean five-directional color system—she develops a personal chromatic language of layered tones articulated through distinctive brushwork. Her rotational pointillist method—stamping paint onto the surface—forms a defining structure of her practice. This repetitive yet performative act generates rhythm and intensity, as each dot emerges from a single bodily gesture and accumulates into a surface that indexes time.
Beneath the visible image lies a stratified structure in which each layer exists as a complete painting. Formed across different moments, these layers create temporal depth, recalling earlier motifs of still lifes and natural forms—trees, mountains, and flowers—which gradually re-emerge with increasing clarity and chromatic complexity. In her work, past and present remain in active dialogue. Earlier paintings are not fixed but reactivated, reconfigured through recurring motifs and evolving surfaces. This ongoing process becomes a sustained inquiry into the nature of painting itself. Moving between past and present, her work reaches toward an originary time prior to human intervention. Like the unknowable origins of stars or fire, painting becomes both contemplation and response to time. In this sense, her practice weaves time anew, quietly advancing toward an unfolding unity.
